Ford EcoBoost engines are the latest environmentally friendly technology which provide the fuel economy of a small engine and the performance of a large one. They feature direct petrol injection, turbocharging and twin independent variable valve timing to maximise combustion efficiency. This results in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions being reduced by up to 20% compared to conventional petrol engines with a similar power output. Each of the of these features have have potential advantages on their own but when deployed together they significantly enhance performance. Ford EcoBoost technology provides customers with many of the benefits of the latest diesel engines whilst retaining the driving character of petrol units.

The reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions is achieved by burning fuel in the most efficient and cleanest way possible. At the heart of the engine is a high pressure direct injection system which injects fuel into each cylinder in small, precise amounts at pressures of up to 200bar.

Compared to the conventional fuel injection, direct injection produces a denser, coolet charge and like in a modern diesel, multiple injections are possible per combustion cycle, which further enhances efficiency. Variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust camshafte helps four-cylinder EcoBoost enginesoptimise gas flow through the combustion chamber at all speeds, improving performance and efficiency.

EcoBoost engines deliver the same strong low-end torque as modern diesel engines, combined with refined and responsive performance. EcoBoost uses advanced turbocharger technology, with small, low inertia rotors that spin at speeds of more than 200,000rpm. This eensures that maximum torque can be achieved at 1,500rpm or lower, and yet with careful matching of the turbo, Ford EcoBoost engines remain powerful and responsive above 5000rpm. This delivers a much wider spread of power than a typical diesel engine.

The performance boost offered by turbocharging results in around 50% increase in torque,allowing the engine capacity to be lower whilst still retaining performance. All EcoBoost engines are also equiped with an overboost fucction.
